Utility of Skeletal Mass as a Measure of Body Size in Lizards

چکیده
—Appropriate and relevant measures of body size are essential to understand scaling relationships or to compare morphometric data from specimens or taxa of different sizes. Traditionally, body mass and snout–vent length have been used as measures of body size in lizards. Here, we report on the relevance of an alternative measure of size, skeletal mass, which is highly correlated with traditional body size measures and may have more practical value when using skeletal measurements based on museum

Evolution of limb bone loading and body size in varanid lizards.
Geometric scaling predicts that stresses on limb bones and muscles should increase with body size. Mammals counter this size-related increase in stress partially through changes in bone geometry, but largely through changes in posture, with larger species having a more erect stance. However, the ability to counter size-related stresses in this fashion may be limited to those taxa that have a pa...
متن کاملPrevalence and intensity of coccidian blood parasite infection in three species of lizards from Markazi Province, Iran
Coccidian (Apicomplexa: Coccidia) parasites have been reported in almost all groups of vertebrates. These parasites may cause serious ecological and pathological effects to their hosts. Reptiles were found the be the host of the parasites of the genera Schellackia and Lankesterella, as these parasites undergo their entire life cycle in the reptilian body, with an intermediate stage of dormancy ...
متن کاملOptimal body size with respect to maximal speed for the yellow-spotted monitor lizard (Varanus panoptes; Varanidae).
Studies of locomotor performance often link variation in morphology with ecology. While maximum sprint speed is a commonly used performance variable, the absolute limits for this performance trait are not completely understood. Absolute maximal speed has often been shown to increase linearly with body size, but several comparative studies covering a large range of body sizes suggest that maxima...
متن کاملBioelectrical Impedance versus Body Mass Index for Predicting Body Composition Parameters in Sedentary Job Women
Objective: Nowadays the value of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in the estimation of body adiposity both on a clinical basis in the individual and epidemiologically in large populations is of great interest. The current study determine accuracy of BIA compared with body mass index (BMI) measurement for estimating body composition in a group of normal weight employee women with a sedenta...
متن کاملScaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
